Hey guys, sorry if this is a newb question....

But Im unfamiliar what the "trackback" field is for on page 2 of "Submit a Story".
Trackback: You can add or change the trackback url if it has been detected automatically

It doesnt seem to be on Digg, so I assume it's something related to Pligg only. Can someone explain to me what it is for? I just want to know if its worth keeping in my Pligg website that Im working on.

Thanks!

Track backs are something that most blogs use. when you enter the track back URL it will count the number of views on that persons blog and show it between the story and comments.. It's basically something to show blogs who is linking to their stuff.. Most people haven't the slightest idea how to use it.

I have read a lot of threads about trackbacks and I still don't know how to use them or even if the bugs have been fully worked out. If anyone can spare a couple of minutes to write a "Trackbacks for Dummies" entry it would be very much appreciated. Also, if chuchroast or one of the other "Big Pliggs" would lend a word to the completeness of the feature it would be wonderful.

Thanks!

Trackbacks have always worked, but some people using legacy versions of php have seen problems, that's expected. There is nothing you as a pligg site webmaster can do to make them work, it all depends on the site you are linking to. It also depends on if your server has the ability to use url_fopen. When examining the url a trackback url is found it will notify that url of a submission. There is nothing you will see on your site if it's working or not. The trackback link will only show on the blog that was originally linked from. It's coming close to 3 years with pligg now, and trackbacking is almost a dead technology. It's one of those things in which it's not going to hurt being there, yet might not help that much being there.

If Trackback is outdated and confusing can we disable the option in the ADD STORY - sounds as if life would be a lot easier for the average user.

Is there a way to disable or remover Trackback?
