So after much debate with myself I think I'm going to do it and setup a forum for my RunStream website and figured that this is a good place to start getting some advice.

The forum is going to serve as an FAQ area for RunStream as well as be open to all things RSS.

So first off, what do I need to get (other than vBulletin - I think I'd rather run this that phpBB but I'm open to suggestion) to have a forum that works, well like this one. I notice theres "vBSEO" but what else do I need? Any 'must have' mods and such.

Also, any tips on how to create or maintain a successful forum would be appreciated. TRUST ME, I know it's not an easy task to do and if I didn't think it was valuable to the site, I probably wouldn't even bother.

Again, I'm establishing this as a way for RunStream users to be able to communicate with us and each other but don't want to close anyone out who wants to participate. Words of wisdom - do's and don'ts, all would be really helpful.

I know, I probably sound like a noob but I'd rather ask and get it right than pretend to know it all and fail.

Thannks in advance for your help.

vBulletin.org is your friend. They have every mod under the sun, including free versions of vBSEO (you don't need to spend $150 on SEO software, trust me). The latest version of vB is opening the way for integration of other products, including a blogging platform, so now is a good time to get involved with it!

I can't really say there are any "must have" mods. There are a lot, and if you browse vBulletin.org you will probably find many you'd like to install. Just think about what you'd like out of your forum, setup the basic install, and then go mod hunting.

So I've taken a look at the site you suggested Simon but haven't been able to find the free version of vbSEO you mentioned?

Any chance you have a direct link to it?

Sure, there are a couple of alternatives:

vRewrite - SEOed URLs for vBulletin - vBulletin.org Forum -vRewrite
vRewrite "Lite" - vBulletin.org Forum - vRewrite Lite (made by me!)
Zoints SEO - vBulletin.org Forum - Zoints SEO
