    Lightbulb Meneame or Pligg?

I am going to be hiring some developers to build out a specialized clone based on some social news sites (like digg.com, etc), but I wanted to start with a code base of either Meneame:

    últimas publicadas // menéame
    Menéame » Source code
    Menéame » Translations
    http://meneame.wikispaces.com/space/.../meneame-en.po

Or...Pligg of course. Does anyone here have experiences with both of them? What are your thoughts on what I should use as a base? I know some would be biased (I would be too if I were on the Pligg site), but I wanted to see if I could get some honest opinions with some reasoning behind them.

Both seem to be moving along in development and have good bases of users...obviously it helps that most of the documentation and help here is in English. I know Pligg started from the original code base of meneame.net but is a whole different animal now...then again from looking at the meneame.net site, so are they.

    Thoughts?

    Meneame or Pligg?

Actually surprised there isn't more discussion on this thread. I am not trying to get people to say whether meneame at this point is better or not. Just trying to figure out what might be best for me. Does anyone have any experience with the new meneame? I think people in the past said it was faster since it didn't use the templating engine, but doesn't anyone have some good comparison chart or something of meneame and pligg so you could see the differences?

    http://pligg.com/demo/
I haven't dealt with Meneame in about 2 years when I originally converted it to English, but I believe meneame and Pligg are two separate beasts. Meneame I believe doesn't have much of a backend (if any). True that meneame doesn't use a templating engine, but Pligg's Template Lite doesn't slow things down that much. With all of the enhancements made over the past 6 months I really don't think that most sites have anything to complain about anymore. Most users who have had issues with load times are using $7/month shared hosting plans and haven't optimized Pligg through some simple configurations. If you have a decent budget and development team you might be able to create a nice meneame-based site, but Pligg is much easier to setup. I also believe that developers are probably more familiar with working with Pligg.

Just for some perspective on my situation at least:

    1. I have a good budget (in the thousands; $10K+)
    2. I have developers that have never touched either system

I am trying to figure out what would be better to start with as a base for developers rather than someone trying to do start with something out of the box that provides immediate return.

Trying to make a recommendation on what to use as a baseline start since it will speed development and make it cheaper. There are a lot of things I wouldn't need that pligg has, but there are some things like some of the admin that is nice.

I do like that meneame has a decent working karma system. It seems to be fairly well thought out.

I suppose v2.0 isn't close either right? Didn't you all say that code was actually somewhat written already and offered it to people to test out?

Spanish Speaking Members (Meneame Vs. Pligg)

Sorry to bring this up again, but I have a question that maybe someone with Spanish-speaking abilities can help...I am trying to decide between Pligg and Meneame. Meneame.net in its current form does look pretty cool and has some great features. They also have their code available:

    meneame.wikispaces.com
    svn.meneame.net

The thing is, is the code the same as what you see at meneame.net or is it a very old code base (like the original) of meneame?

There are some cool things like sneak (history) on a specific story, google maps, integration, etc....but if the open source code is the old code then it wouldn't be the same.

Does anyone know the answer to this? Hard to answer unless you know Spanish.

Yo hablo espanol , and i visit menéame a lot. Is hard to say which one is better.
Pligg is a fork of meneame after day 10 of meneame inauguration. There are a lot of clones using menéame coding and a lot using pligg. The thing is that pligg is more amateur friendly and has build a strong community to help you install the code; But in menéame there is not a community, but they have a wiki were all the developers put their part, also Ricardo Gallir the founder is working 24/7 in his menéame code, I check the wiki a lot and menéame has a strong antispam solution either code or members behind, like they call “mafia de menéame”.
You have to see this from 2 points of view
1: Gallir has a very popular site, he knows what he needs, then he writes down the code, that means an update every day and you can get the latest update.
2: The developers of pligg, gives updates Not every day and they write the code based on users necessities , but in pligg, the community is great, if you ask, you have an answer, in menéame not.
And about the geovisión not body uses that thing.
I recommend stay with pligg, unless you have Spanish speaking developers because the little instructions are in espanol. (This is one of the reasons a lot is sites prefer pligg)
I am going to start a site with menéame code and I will let you know later the comparisons.
So, Install pligg you will not be disappointed.

this list will show meneame and fresqui (meneame code) and sphinn and videosift (pligg code)

    :not me:
