Gzip compression

Hey, I have dedicated server with Aplus. And me and savant tried to enable gzip compression on server uncommenting addencode commands. We couldn't get it work, so he had to do it alternative way with .htaccess.

Now I am curious, why gzip compression didn't work by simply editing httpd.conf file? Does this have anything to do with Aplus server or maybe how Pligg software handles gzip compression... ? Also, has anybody else had similar problems while installing Pligg on a dedicated server?

Thanks.

PS: I might leave Aplus for good.... but that's another story...

The problem was the browser not uncompressing the gzipped files which lead to errors.

The browser said it could handle gzip, but the server never replied back saying the files were encoded with gzip. So when the browser got the files, it didn't know waht to do.

This was a problem with the server configuration not with the pligg code. heh it's so great to say that.

We did resolved it by a few lines in htaccess

So we can conclude that Aplus.net dedicated server did not work correctly when we edited httpd.conf? The reason I am asking this is because I am sick of Aplus.net and might change the host. Savant, nothing seemed to work correctly on that server from day one. Let me give you another example. When I installed Dolphin (dating software) on it, I got blank page after install. And we had to change open_basedir to another location. There was always "something" with their dedicated server. I had a way too many big and small annoyances with their server. I mean, apache manual says one thing, and then when I implement it, I get half result or no result. I've been bitching abuout aplus.net about quite some time, but I don't think I will stay for another month with them...
