Suggestions for end user features

This article got the thinking, we need to add features for the end-user. Something to keep them coming back to your site.

Quote:
Digg allows users (i.e. bloggers or publishers) submit stories, which in turn get dugg (or reviewed) by power users called diggers or editors. Once stories receive enough votes, they are published to the Digg front page and get dugg (or saved) by browsers or readers.

Digg’s tremendous popularity derives from benefits and incentives afforded to all three groups of users listed above, namely bloggers/publishers use it as a conduit for publicity, diggers/editors are hungry for latest breaking or promising stories and derive pleasure in and excitement from being the first to discover and report, while browsers/readers get to read top-notch contents. Morever stories submitted and saved (or dugg in Digg’s nomenclature) are kept in users personal area like bookmarks, giving convenient access for future references.
So what are some things your users would like to see?

Depending on your "target market", would anyone be intrested in a "shoutbox"?

I wouldent.
what I would be interested in (as a want) would be better administrative pages. HOWEVER, I can deal with that for now, I could make a HTML page with forms to show you how i think the backend should look like, with my schedual don't expect anything soon i'm busy as hell, I'vebeen workng on my pligg sites for just over a month now and they still arn't done!

I will try upgrading to 6.01 tommorow, and post a upgrade diary in the ugrade forum.

ps: just noticed i'm 3rd top poster didnt think i posted that many times here!

One end user feature I think would make Pligg sites 'stickier' is a 'latest comments' option for the homepage (similar to something you'd see on a blog sidebar) and a comments RSS feed (optional of course as the usefulness of this may drop if your particular Pligg site is busy.

Podcasts feeds to go along with each of the current rss feeds available.

Groups would be awesome as well (both private and public). It would be cool if, similar to flickr, you could add a post to one of your groups by clicking a "add to group" button on the post and then it would display your groups, then just click a group.

In addition to groups being private or public, marking invididual pliggs as private only to the user would be useful as well.

This way, private pliggs could be kept private for X months until it's ready to be made public.

a ajax shoutbox would be nice.,

imagine, while reading a article, auto updating shoutbox. pretty huh

talking about user's

lets take a look at myspace its just a profile page, why can't pligg have one of those.
it would bring the social networking aspect to it.

user profile pages would have things they like, music, movies

and personal tags they prefer tech, movie. and the profile would show the news with those tags. personalised news

ok a bit more ranting
din't want to open a new topic.
User registration: it would be easier for user if they didn't have to click verfiy. it would detech when it looses focus(?) and check automatically and display a message accordingly.

Savant,

I've been pushing this for 2 months now, with no takers accept Beatniak. We want to beef up the profile page... it's a huge issue for us.

if there's no takers i might work on this after the exam, ofcourse with beatniak
maybe we could have a discussion to the things we want to have on the profile page.
design the necessary table design and send the our info to ash or yank..
it'd help pligg with the dev work

so people go to all those soci networking sites and find what features (or think of some) and post it.
and we can work from there. sry for the thread hijack.

Savant,

Sounds good.

BTW, I was speaking with Beatniak this morning and we agree we are at a bottleneck right now looking for a solution. The problem is we have 4 coders all working separately, and are struggling with reconciling our different php files.

Any recommendations?

We were looking at www.moonedit.com, but don't think that will work as it doesn't appear to color code changes. Steef (beatniak) says trac SVN "could" be the way to go as Shakk recommended it, but neither of us have experience with it.

Anyone's advise would be helpful.
