Days to Publish config variable

How can I call the configuration variable 'Days To Publish' within a php class such as Search? ( I want to use the variable to limit the search results for certain pages).

Just to be clear - I'm not asking for instructions on how to modify search.php - just asking how configuration variables can be accessed from with an object.
