Integrated logins - MySpace, Tribe, whatever...

This is a kind of crazy idea, but I was thinking about ways to make signing up for pligg easier. It's amazing how much of a barrier to entry a simple sign up can be.

What if one's pligg page were set up to work with, say, MySpace accounts? So that if someone were logged into MySpace, and they showed up on pligg, they would already be signed up for Pligg... is this totally impossible?

What makes me wonder is that Pligg successfully figured out my Gravatar, and I'm still sort of baffeled how that happened! It ought to ba able to pull other types of account information in no? Then do things like send the person's pliggs the other way too, like to their MySpace page as an RSS include or something?

I'm just thinking out of the box today!

gravatar is based solely on emails, so if you post it checks your email addy against gravatar.com DB, however this is only because gravatar has allowed this to happen, for a place like myspace they will have to allow access to their login algorithm + DB etc. we will need to know how they store their passwords then be able to reverse them to what they should be etc. quiet hard without myspace being fully cooperative, and honestly I dont see it happening. However a feature like drupal has where all users of any drupal site (that has this enabled) can login another site by using a format of <username>@<domainname>.<tld> , that seems feasible but its upto the dev's here to consider something like that keeping in mind the security and network hurdles.

Geeklog uses a technology much like what you want. Their latest version allows you to sign into a site using a LiveJournal or Blogger username and password. You can hook it up to other sites I'm sure, but I'm not sure what other sites support this. You can see a demo of it here: http://demo.geeklog.net/.
