Request: Poster Reward System (karma?)

Ok, so after a search for 'karma' i didn't see anything about this so don't get angry if i missed it. Most of the posts I saw were unanswered questions about 'why isn't karma working'

Anyways, Karma is great however I think it would be great if along with karma points there was a way to increase a person's 'rank' after x amount of posts or a set increases in Karma - very much how VBulletin here works (apparently I'm a "Constant Pligger"!)

I think you get my drift...is this do-able, and if so how hard is it?

Does anyone else think this would be useful to Pligg?

Anyone want to take a crack at it?

Wow, so many questions... :P

This is what i think of the karma system.

implementing a basic karma system is quite easy.
basic:
+X karma for submitting article
+X karma for voting on article.
+X karma for being voted.

This is will add about 1-2 db queries to pligg every time someone does something.
and could easily made into cron job, that runs every hour or so.

When you try and implement something a bit more complicated.

like +10 karma for the first 10 stories than +5 karma for the rest of the stories.
+5 karma for voting on a popular article, +10 karma for voting on a unpopular article.

with the second one, if it's a cron job every hour, a user might have voted a unpopular article but by 1 hour it becomes a popular article, so he might just get +5 instead of +10. So this type of karma needs to be sort of realtime and can be database intensive. and we will have people say pligg is getting slower.

maybe i'm worrying about speed too much what does others think

You probably have a point from a speed perspective. Perhaps what I was thinking should be implemented is a bit more dumbed down.

I was thinking of something that just rewarded participation regardless of how popular the story is. So if they participated in 100 stories they would then receive a 'reward' - you are now a "Pligg Koder" which you probably earned after 1000 posts I'm guessing.

You get the drift...
