Installing Pligg on Windows

Quick-and-easy (and slightly dirty) approach to installing Pligg on Windows, suitable for playing with Pligg on your personal computer before moving to your hosting server.

Tutorial

  1. Download and unzip InstantRails into c:\instantrails . The zip file actually opens as instantrails-1.6-win, but move the directory instantrails-1.6-win\instantrails into c:\instantrails (Although InstantRails is built for use of Ruby, it also makes a convenient Apache-PHP bundle with admin GUI.)
  2. Run InstantRails.exe. This gives you an admin GUI for Apache, MySQL, MyPHPAdmin
  3. Download and unzip Pligg Beta 9 into c:\instantrails\www
  4. Change dir-name from Pligg Beta 9 to pligg
  5. Delete .default suffix on pligg\settings.php.default and pligg\libs\dbconnect.php.default
  6. In pligg\config.php, to avoid warning messages inline in Pligg pages, change //error_reporting(E_ALL); to error_reporting(0);
  7. Kill any servers running on port 80, including Skype.
  8. Double-click InstantRails GUI in System Tray, startup Apache, MySQL.
  9. From InstantRails GUI (either from System Tray I' InstantRails icon, right click; or from the GUI opened from above step, clicking on the I icon): Choose Configure->Database (via MyPHPAdmin). A browser window opens. Enter pligg in field "Create new database" and click Create. Note that you already have an unlimited-permissions user with username root, password empty-string.
  10. Goto http://localhost/pligg/install. Follow instructions.
  11. Click link for admin page.
  12. Use Pligg. To play with multiple users, it is easiest to use multiple browsers.
